HISTORY OF PHARMACY

In 1956 Ross Hibble bought the Tumby Bay Pharmacy from the first Tumby Bay Pharmacist, Doug Underwood.

In his forty years of pharmacy at Tumby Bay Ross would oversee many innovations and improvements in the provision of medicine to the community.

The weekly boat trip with ingredients to be weighed mixed and packaged evolved into a daily road service from Adelaide with fully packaged capsules, and tablets, ready made mixtures.

From the early eighties dispensary supplies could be ordered electronically and delivered the next day.

Peter & Ross always made themselves available to the community with advice and information on health and medication matters with the occasional emergency after hour’s service (this could be anything from urgent medicines to hair dye or dummies).

Ross enjoyed a period of late night opening on Saturday nights when the movies were showing in the late sixties and early seventies. Whilst not exactly profitable Ross did find this a rewarding exercise as the regulars dropped in for a chat.

Tumby Bay Pharmacy was well known for its unique inventory. Guns and ammo were part of the stock on hand at the pharmacy during Ross’s time and there were still a few cartons of shotgun pellets in the back shed at Spencer Street up until the move over the road in 1996.

Ross & his wife Elaine had four children Garry, Peter, Jayne and Richard. While Garry & Jayne helped out in the pharmacy over the years it was Peter who decided to study Pharmacy at University. After qualifying in Adelaide Peter returned to work with his father in 1978 becoming a partner in 1979.

During this time Peter was worked as a locum all over the Eyre Peninsula and Northern Territory. Extended stints in Port Augusta, Whyalla, Alice Springs, Cleve, Adelaide, Crystal Brook, Ceduna and Kakadu gave him experience in a range of pharmacies.

Peter and Ross installed the first computerized dispensary on the Eyre Peninsula at a time when many Adelaide pharmacies were still using manual recording. Peters interest in computers led him to write the first retail software program for the pharmacy. This lasted through until 1995 (with a couple of rewrites and lots of little fixes) when a commercial program was purchased.

In 1997 Ross & Elaine retired and sold the business to Peter & Jackie.
A couple of years later Peter & Jackie bought the premises across the road (previously Garths Shoe Store) and after extensive renovations moved the business to it’s current address at 10 North Terrace.

Moving was a great opportunity to design a more comfortable and efficient workspace for Peter and the staff and also to make the Pharmacy a pleasant and welcoming place for the customers. Feedback from customers and locum pharmacists is very positive. Parents really enjoy the Mothers & Babies feeding room and also the toddlers play area. The space has allowed us to stock a wider range of products and to display more gifts etc.

2014-2=16

There is always room for improvement and so Peter & Jackie made a commitment to Quality Care Accreditation. The accreditation process is ongoing. This year will be the third time the pharmacy will be assessed for accreditation. Peter, Jackie and the staff will work hard to maintain their accreditation first gained in 2000.
